United Way Volunteer Honored with Thiele Award

June 17, 2013 (Fort Wayne, Ind.) – United Way of Allen County volunteer Clarence "Mickey" Benton was recently honored with the Monsignor Thiele award at a June 14 breakfast reception at Fort Wayne Country Club. Each year, the Raymond Rosenberger Foundation awards a committed United Way advocate with the Monsignor Thiele award. Monsignor Charles Thiele was rector of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fort Wayne from 1905 to 1938 and a priest in the Fort Wayne Diocese for nearly 53 years, serving under four bishops. Raymond Rosenberger and his parents were parishioners of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Protection for workers major point for UAW

This column is in response to the recent column by Sid Salter regarding the United Auto Workers’ attempt to win a union organization vote at the Canton Nissan Plant. He characterized UAW’s exposure of the company’s failure to live up to Mississippi taxpayers’ expectations as “crocodile tears.”

UAW workers are also taxpayers, whose contributions to the state coffers are involved in the recent revelations that Nissan’s employment practices have not matched their incentive package promises.

UAW President upbeat over Volkswagen plant prospects

The head of the United Auto Workers is sounding an upbeat note on a future union presence at Chattanooga's Volkswagen plant, even as others question the prospects and the wisdom of such a move.

UAW President Bob King said in an interview with a Detroit auto industry media outlet that VW is successful globally, in part, because all of its plants -- except in Chattanooga -- are represented by labor unions and employees share in decision-making through works councils.
